For many of us, technology is second nature, checking emails, paying bills online or connecting with friends on social media. But for countless women across Greater Manchester, the digital world feels like a locked door. One they’ve been told, time and time again, they don’t have the key to open.
At Funding Futures, we believe every woman deserves the chance to step confidently into the modern world. That’s why our Connect Her programme was created, to empower women who once felt left behind by technology, giving them the tools, confidence and belief to take charge of their digital lives.
Because in today’s world, being digitally excluded doesn’t just mean missing out on convenience, it means missing out on opportunity.
When Confidence Feels Out of Reach
Many of the women who join Connect Her share a similar story. They’ve spent years raising families, working in low-paid jobs, or simply surviving. Digital skills weren’t part of their world and now, even the simplest online tasks feel overwhelming.
They’ll tell us “I’m rubbish with computers” or “I’m scared I’ll break it”. Behind the laughter, there’s often a quiet shame, a feeling that they’ve been left behind in a world that’s moved on without them.
But when they walk through our doors, we tell them something powerful:
“You haven’t been left behind, you’ve just been waiting for the right start.”
And that’s what Connect Her is all about.
Building Skills and Belief
Over six weeks, Connect Her guides women through the digital basics. From setting up emails and creating documents in Word and Excel, to understanding online safety and using the internet to find work, learning and connection.
Each woman receives her own Chromebook, a symbol of independence and a tool of transformation. For many, it’s the first time they have ever owned a laptop of their own.
But this isn’t just a computer course. It’s a confidence course.
We weave in sessions on self-belief, communication and emotional wellbeing, because learning to click a mouse is one thing, but believing your voice matters online is another.
Our participants often describe the change as “switching on the light”. The fear fades. The curiosity grows. the world starts to open up.
More Than Skills. A Lifeline.
Digital literacy isn’t just about logging on; it’s about logging into life.
For women who have been isolated, unemployed or struggling with confidence, technology can be the bridge back to opportunity. Through Connect Her, we’ve helped women apply for jobs, start businesses, connect with family abroad, and access vital online services.
One woman shared:
“Before this, I couldn’t even send an email. Now, I’ve applied for a college course online and I’m proud of myself.”
Another said:
“It’s not just about computers. It’s about feeling like I belong in today’s world again.”
That’s what makes Connect Her so special. It’s not just about giving women digital skills, it’s about giving back their dignity, their voice and their confidence to participate fully in life.
Tackling Digital Poverty Head-On
Digital exclusion and poverty go hand in hand. Many of the women we work simply can’t afford a device or home broadband. That’s why, alongside our training, we provide free data and Wi-Fi access up to 40 women every month, ensuring that the learning doesn’t stop outside of the classroom.
We know that real empowerment removes barriers. It’s not enough to teach digital skills if women can’t afford to stay connected. By tackling data poverty, we give every woman the tools to keep learning, exploring, and growing long after the course ends.
Breaking the Cycle, For Good
When we teach a woman digital confidence, we’re not just helping her, we’re helping her children tomorrow.
Many of our learners are mothers or carers who want to support their children with homework, stay in touch with schools, or manage online payments. By giving them these skills, we’re breaking a generational cycle of exclusion and helping whole families thrive in a digital world.
The ripple effect is powerful. Women who once doubted themselves become role models for their children, their peers, and their communities. They show that confidence is contagious, and that it’s never too late to learn.
A Safe Space to Learn, Fail, and Flourish
What makes Connect Her truly unique is the environment we create. There’s no judgment, no pressure, and no such thing as a silly question.
We laugh together when the mouse disappears off the screen. We cheer when someone sends their first email. And we celebrate every single milestone, because each one is a victory.
By the end of the six weeks, the women who once hesitated to get in touch a keyboard are sharing documents, researching jobs, and teaching each other new shortcuts.
From fear to flourish, that’s what empowerment looks like.
The Future is Digital and it’s Female
In Greater Manchester, digital inclusion isn’t just a nice idea, it’s a necessity. As services, education and work opportunities move increasingly online, the women we serve deserve to be part of that future.
Connect Her ensures that they won’t just keep up, they’ll lead the way.
We’re proud of every woman whose overcome her fears and embraced technology. They remind us that progress isn’t about perfection, it’s about persistence.
As one graduate beautifully put it:
“I used to think that computers weren’t for people like me. Now I realise they’re for everyone.”
At Funding Futures, we believe that no women should feel behind in the digital world. With the right support, the right tools and the right belief, every woman can now move on from fear to flourish, and step boldly into her future.
Because confidence isn’t taught, it’s unlocked.
Good news! We are now looking for our next cohort of learners to join our Connect Her programme! Who’s it for? Women aged 16+ who are not currently in employment, education or training (NEET) living in Greater Manchester.
